FAQ for Eco-Friendly Packaging

Are Awesome Pack compostable satchels EN13432 certified?

Yes. Awesome Pack’s compostable satchels are certified to EN13432, the international standard for packaging that can be recovered through composting. This certification applies to industrial composting, so the satchels are designed to break down in a commercial composting facility.

What is EN13432 certification?

EN13432 is a European standard that sets out what packaging must achieve to be classed as industrially compostable. To pass, the material has to biodegrade by at least 90% within six months under controlled composting conditions and break into small fragments within 12 weeks. The resulting compost must also be safe for plant growth, and the material must stay within set limits for heavy metals.

How long do EN13432 compostable satchels take to break down?

EN13432 compostable satchels break down within 180 days when processed under industrial composting conditions. Awesome Pack’s compostable satchels meet this 180-day timeframe. In a home compost bin, landfill or the open environment, breakdown can take much longer because the conditions differ from a managed facility.

Can I put EN13432 compostable satchels in my home compost bin?

EN13432 compostable satchels are not certified for home composting, so a home compost bin is not the recommended way to dispose of them. Backyard bins rarely hold the steady high temperatures these satchels need, so they may break down slowly or only partly. Before disposing of them, check whether your council’s food and garden organics (FOGO) bin or a commercial composting service accepts certified compostable packaging.

How do I know if a compostable satchel is genuinely certified?

A genuinely certified compostable satchel will name a specific standard, such as EN13432, and be backed by a certificate from a recognised certification body. Words like “eco-friendly” or “biodegradable” on their own are not proof of certification, as they have no fixed testing requirements. If certification details are not shown on the product or listing, ask the supplier. Awesome Pack customers can contact us with questions about the compostable satchel range.

Why are Awesome Pack’s compostable satchels certified to EN13432?

Awesome Pack’s compostable satchels carry EN13432 certification so businesses have a recognised, tested standard behind the compostability claim. It tells buyers how the satchels break down, under which conditions and within what timeframe. That makes it easier to compare enviro and earth-friendly packaging materials on evidence rather than on marketing language.

What is the difference between compostable and biodegradable packaging?

Compostable packaging breaks down into compost within a set timeframe under defined conditions. “Biodegradable” on its own does not specify how long breakdown takes or what conditions it needs. Certified compostable products, such as those meeting EN13432, must pass tests for breakdown speed and compost quality, while a general biodegradable claim has no equivalent requirement.

Businesses comparing biodegradable and recyclable packaging material should treat compostable, biodegradable and recyclable as three separate claims, each with its own disposal pathway.

Are EN13432 compostable satchels suitable for Australian businesses?

Yes, EN13432 compostable satchels are suitable for Australian eCommerce, retail and shipping businesses. For businesses switching to environmentally friendly packaging, the main thing to check is whether industrial composting is available locally, as access varies between councils and regions. Awesome Pack dispatches sustainable packaging materials from Melbourne to businesses Australia-wide, with bulk buy options for higher-volume orders.
